» Back to Article Index In addition to installing your efficient watering system, consult with us about planting California natives. Plants native to our state are unlike any other in the world. We have richly colored spring wildflowers, vibrant ferns to our extraordinary Redwood groves. Of course, we work with local nurseries to bring the best to your California Native garden.
Of course, advantages to planting with California's vast array of native plants include:
- Save water to preserve our land and to help your budget.
- Native plants have been here for hundreds or thousands of years and have adapted to temperatures, soil conditions and water (or lack thereof).
- Because they have adapted to conditions, you will use little or no fertizilers or pesticides, which helps preserve our waterways as, if used, these chemicals will leach into the water.
- Maintenance is reduced as these plants have adapted to the growing seasons.
- By extension, planting natives helps surrounding countryside; when birds and other animals feed from your garden, they spread the seeds.Planting with natives is advantageous to you and to the rest of our exceptional state.
Pacific Coast Iris
Pacific Coast Iris have been hybridized through the years, producing gorgeous flowers
that are pest resistant, easy to grow, and water thrifty.
Iris thrive from the coastal ranges into the Sierra Nevada foothills, and south to Mariposa and Santa Cruz counties in sunny, open woodland sites, grasslands or meadows with filtered or no shade.
During Spring hikes around Marin, particularly alongside trails on Mt. Tamalpais, you will see wild iris hugging cliffs or along creek beds surrounded by ferns and Redwoods.
Summer is a period of rapid plant growth. With few exceptions, your garden will benefit from a 2- to 4-inch application of organic mulch and a regular program of feeding your soil with mulch and compost.
Let me
enhance your native garden with the newest natives.
